ALL CHILDREN DESERVE EDUCATION WITH QUALITY
Millions of children are not receiving education simply because of who they are or where they live. Deprived of learning because they are trapped in emergencies, face extreme poverty, or are discriminated because of their gender, disability, or ethnic origin. The world’s most vulnerable and excluded children are losing their education.
- Today, almost 1 million children of primary school age cannot read or write.
- More than half of the three to six-year-olds do not have access to pre-primary education.
- Approximately 150 thousand children are at risk of interrupting their studies.
- 300 thousand children will never enroll in school, and two thirds of them are girls.
Without quality basic education, children are less likely to escape the cycle of poverty and may never have the opportunity to fulfill their potential.
OUR PROJECT
We work to ensure that all children receive the support and care they need before starting school, and that they are able to read and write. We also work to ensure that schools are places where all children are safe and happy.
A child’s early years are crucial in laying the foundation for a life of learning. We work with communities to create safe and stimulating preschool environments, to keep children well-fed and healthy, and to bring instructional materials home so that the whole family can support the child’s education.
We work with national and local governments to improve access to education and develop programs where children can improve their reading, writing and numeracy skills at an early age.
We also provide education in times of conflict or after a natural disaster to ensure that children do not have their education interrupted or terminated early.
OUR IMPACT ON CHILDREN
In 2019, we reached 1.3 million children through our educational programs. One of these children is Marcela de Amazonas.
When Marcela was 10 years old, she was forced to work on the streets selling candy and she stopped studying.
But Marcela’s life was transformed when she was able to enroll in our program, which helps children who dropped out of school to get back to normal.
Today, she is learning to read and write, as well as math and other basic life skills. She is hopeful about her future.
