Life is undeniably precious, and its existence owes much to the invaluable contribution of girls. Unfortunately, throughout history, girls and boys have often been victimized and sacrificed to satisfy the selfish desires of men. The COVID-19 pandemic, for example, resulted in the tragic loss of life of many children, while others found themselves pregnant, facing the burden of unexpected motherhood.
In times of hardship, girls are often subjected to violence, becoming helpless victims of the hunger and anger that plague societies. Even when they seek refuge in camps, they are at risk of sexual abuse by those entrusted with their protection – the very humanitarian workers charged with providing them with a safe environment.
Moreover, when parents are imprisoned and children are left to fend for themselves, girls are often the most vulnerable. So where can these girls turn to access genuine support without sacrificing their bodies? Sadly, even in some traditions, girls are considered commodities, married off at young ages to bring wealth to their families. In this cultural context, discussing essential topics such as sex, menstruation, puberty, HIV and sexually transmitted diseases between adults and girls is taboo, perpetuating ignorance and denying girls the knowledge they need to make informed decisions and grow personally.
Our society has had a negative impact and has contributed to an environment that renders girls illiterate and vulnerable. Aware of this injustice, our NGO AGAPE HAND was created to help girls thrive. Agape Hand focuses on providing educational opportunities and crucial lessons on sexual health, puberty, reproduction, family planning, menstruation, HIV and sexually transmitted infections – areas that have long been denied to girls.
To further improve the well-being of girls, ONG AGAPE HAND has partnered with Nest for future, a Uganda-based organization whose goal is to educate, empower and improve the lives of girls not only in Uganda and Peru, but around the world.
